The Boy Just Doesn't Get It

After all the ranting and raving about what a wonderful teacher I am and that Camille is starting "to get" sailing I have to admit I've failed with Noah. Even on the most elementary level, he just doesn't understand sailing. Case in point:

What kind of sail trim is that? Is he trying to heave to or something? I asked him and got nothing, no searing tirade on how he was in the middle of weathering the sails or whatever ancient people said when gybing pirate ships. Nothing on how he was heaving to in the face of a calamitous gale. He just liked how the sails look I guess.

Here's a close-up:

What do you think he's trying to accomplish? Why is the Captain staring aft? Especially when the cannon is pointing forward? Where the heck is the wheel? I know the set comes with one. Does anybody have thoughts on what's going on here before I write him off as a helpless landlubber?

Wait! That's his telescope not the cannon....it, too, is pointing aft. There might be something going on behind him.

That's just sad!
I feel for you.

There is still hope, hang in there...

lucky no one but us 6 or 9 readers know about this, and we can be paided off...We'll I can!

Ahhh! When you look closely, you notice that both sails are full and drawing. Perhaps the boat is in the middle of a severe downdraft and both sails are efficiently positioned for the impending micro-burst.

Or maybe the captain saw some kelp on the keel, and is backing the boat down under sail. That would also explain why he is facing backwards!

As a helpless landlubber but expert in toddler psychology, my guess is that he knows exactly how that boat should be configured and he's just screwing with you. They are surprising good at figuring out exactly how to push your buttons.

Kid, tell your Dad about wind shear.

He does have the sails perfectly trimmed for sailing on a mountain lake, where the wind at the top of the mast and the wind at the surface of the lake are totally different, and sometimes halfway up, there's yet another wind.

BTW, why did you name your kids after a hurricane and the world's most famous flood survivor? Are you into natural disasters?

And it's amazing how many of the blogs on Tillerman's link list have now ended up on MyOutdoorTv. Five O'Clock Somewhere somehow missed the list of the anointed, but Desert Sea got on. Over at Desert Sea, Laura arrived without a referring URL, so probably she copied and pasted, and she made her comment just seconds after arriving at the blog, so it's unlikely she actually looked at it before making the comment. I'm guessing Desert Sea made the cut because it has "sailing" in its name, and your blog made it because it was in a list of "sailing blogs."

Square rigger wing-on-wing?

OK, I'm going with the wind shear theory except from what I understand, the difference is usually in velocity not direction. But, I'm no expert.

The window in his room is usually open, we don't have AC but he does have an air purifier in his room. It is possible to have a downdraft colliding with the wind from the open window above the boat causing some sort of odd vortex. I'll plug it into a model tonight and see if it can explain the sail trim.

Further to Mark's good suggestion - don't forget about doing the lifelines with some Soft-scrub and a nail brush.

When your (adorably cute!) son brings home the Gold in a Laser (or Finn!) someday, you will show him this photo and have a laugh over his humble beginnings.

I recently discovered the joy of the Google Reader for RSS feeds and found your blog via our friend The Tillerman. I'm a fan already!

Best wishes,
