Going on Record

It's official. I have chosen sides. The Volvo Ocean Racers no longer have to worry about which team the editorial might of EVK4 SuperBlog is backing. It hasn't been easy. I have reasons to root for most teams but it came down to two.

Puma v. Green Dragon

The case for Puma is simple. I have been wearing their sneakers for years. Their hull paintjob is just stupid enough to be cool. But their sails are really cool. I like Ken Read. And I think any company that is going to sponsor the coolest race around and start delivering new sailing gear is worth rooting for.

The case for Green Dragon is even simpler. I'm about 40% Irish. Green is my favorite color. And my daughter was born in the Year of the Dragon. I have no idea who is on their boat so I don't have any sort of "Brave Ocean Going Racer" type of rivalry with them yet. What's not to like about a team like that.

It came down to the boat with the cooler name. How can you go wrong with Green Dragon? It's not a sponsored name, it's just a cool name for a boat. Green Dragon. My pick for the Volvo Ocean Race 2008!

Green Dragon is an alcoholic beverage made by leaching the leaves of the cannabis plant in a high-proof alcohol, most commonly vodka. The THC dissolves into the alcohol resulting in a dark green or brown liquid.

I'm rooting for stoned drunk sailors? How the hell am I going to explain that to my kids?!?

Excellent choice. I do have a very distant connection to Green Dragon too. Actually two connections.

a) Both my grandchildren are approximately 50% Irish.

b) The skipper of Green Dragon is Ian Walker who won the 1996 Olympic silver medal in the 470 crewing for John Merricks. I knew John Merricks because he was a little whippersnapper sailing a 420 (extremely fast) when I sailed against him at Rutland in the UK many years ago.

Anyway I don't wear Puma shoes. Are New Balance sponsoring anybody in this race?

The drink sounds fun! Better than the green fairy.

I'm not a fan of Red. But their paint job is way better than the dragon's. No pazazzzz! but cool name.
