Early Foredeck Work

I've been a long time. My Mom always tells the story about when she brought me home from the hospital, my Uncle George met us there, put me in the dock cart and wheeled me home. I don't know the name of the boat (somebody related, help me out in the comments section please) but this post is about Zorra.

Of course, my earliest memories are doing foredeck (above) on races in the Caribbean and I have been told that Zorra was the fastest boat in the Caribbean in those days. I spent at least two summers sailing the waters around the Virgin Islands. The most clear memories are the beaches and my absolute primal fear every time I'd have to get on or off the boat. Maybe we should have rigged up some sort of pirate swinging system to get me on board.

We don't have a lot of pictures of Zorra from then, but she is owned by Horizon Marine now and can be chartered. Since her restoration, she's been in a couple of races, hosted Bill Clinton on a vacation, and generally just been a beautiful boat.

OK, I had to call my Dad to get this information. The boat we lived aboard when I was born was called Calypso and it was a 56 foot motorboat. Huh? it wasn't a sailboat? I'm about to have an identity crisis. Sheesh.

JulesUK, I would love to contact you to see if you have any pictures of Zorra from that time period. My Dad must have sold her to your family. I'll check your painteddoor blog every once in a while to try to get ahold of you.

Thanks,
Edward

I crewed on Zorra when it was chartered out under the paid captains Paul and ?? Taylor, out of Charlotte Amalie, back in the fall and winter of 1977 ... My long-lost crewmate and backgammon partner, Jonathan Evans was with me ... I have some pictures at home, but am presently circumnavigating on our boat, ile de Grace, a decidely-unpicturesque catamaran ... lovely boat, very quick, and great for charter.
