Overboard!

I don't put enough thought into crew overboard situations and don't practice recovery techniques often enough. A thread on Sailing Anarchy got me thinking about it today and provided a link to an interesting site called Crew Overboard.

This is a cool way to get somebody back on board if you have some freeboard to your boat.

I sense an MOB-training-day coming up.

That's an interesting technique with the line run along the side... My editor, Tim over a Navagear.com has got his parbuckle ladder all fabricated and installed: http://www.navagear.com/2007/07/overboard-rescue-parbuckleladder-3/ We haven't taken it out for testing with a drysuit in Puget Sound yet, but it makes an ok hammock!

Well worth a practice I would have thought. Especially as you take your kids sailing so often.

Tillie, you are absolutely right. I just can't figure out which kid I'm going to throw over as the test subject. The older one swims better, but the boy sure looks buouyant.

Your daughter can sail... toss the younger one overboard, and have her swing back and fetch him. It's all about involving the family.

:-)

No, you missed my point. You should jump overboard yourself and see if your daughter can steer the boat back to do a man-overboard-recovery to rescue you.

Seriously though, if you did go overboard could the next best helmsman on the boat handle the recovery? I'd miss your blog more than toothpaste.

Interesting ...

Once upon a time, when Pat and I were taking sailing classes that would enable us to go coastal cruising, we had an instructor who wrote free-lance articles for sailing magazines. He had just done a product review on a new version of the Lifesling, and one of the ways he tested it was to go overboard and pretend to be unconscious, and have his then-9-year-old daughter rescue him.

It worked.
