Virtual Sailing

Tillerman recently wrote an excellent review of Second Life and how it can be used for bored sailors in the winter. He pretty much convinced me that I really didn't want to bother with the program.

Because there's a better solution for virtual sailing. It's called the Sailing Anarchy forums. All it takes is a short registration, a few days of putting up with flaming, and then, presto, you can be a virtual rockstar super-sailor. You get to put down anyone who isn't as good of a sailor as your virtual self, and flame those that don't have as nice of a boat as your virtual yacht. You can claim victories in your virtual regattas and incite flame-wars with your virtual enemies. It's better than sailing.

I've never gotten into the flaming aspects of it but sure as heck enjoy reading them. Go virtual.

Hear hear...SA is quite entertaining. My favorite post today was the Mirabella V post where big Joe V weighed in and all the flamers became instant ass kissers. Classic. By the way, how do you get sweet spammers like Jessica on your blog and all I get are spammers wanting people to buy penis pumps and go gambling?

Eli, thanks for moving me up on google's penis pumps rankings. I might not even delete Jessica's spam since she's looking forward to my updates.

I have to admit I was the first one to jump in on the M5 thread asking JoeV to prove it was him by supplying a swiss bank account number and mother's maiden name. You know, the sorts of things only he would know.

Hello

I was looking for ways that would help me make money from blogging. While I was searching on Bloggermonsterbamalamarama I found your Blog. I know it does not have to do with making money but I really enjoyed reading it, great job!! In fact I have my own Blog and I make a lot of money from http://www.somenewgetrichquicksheme.com. If I were you I would submit your bank accont number and social security number to them so they can start account transfers immediately. Well, I will add your Blog to my favorites and I look forward to all the updates.

Hello

I was looking for ways that would help me increase my girth from blogging. While I was searching on Pumpitupwithblogs I found your Blog. I know it does not have to do with enhancing your manhood but I really enjoyed reading it, great job!! In fact I have my own Blog and I get a lot of extra length from http://www.sometimesablogisjustablog.com. If I were you I would submit your length goals and comments section to them so they can start adding inches to your blog immediately. Well, I will add your Blog to my favorites and I look forward to all the updates.

EVK4 Bloglet gets a lot of posers posting anonymously under more well-known names. There's only one way to determine if you are truly Long John Silver....you have to post something that only you would know. Like say, your swiss bank account number and mother's maiden name.

Looks like mentioning SA has gotten you the same kind of useless comments that litter their Forum. Yes, there is some helpful info, but loads of crap, plus enough negativity to do sailing sufficient damage. The sport is not growing, why support a place that pulls it down?

Anonymous, you seem to be a very angry person, and I feel sorry that you feel that way, but SA has not done anything to cause you pain. If you have problems in your life, please don't take them out on SA, after all Jesus still loves you even if you act immaturely.

So how about an "on-topic" comment on this post?

Virtual Sailing has a place... lets you forget about stuff you should do automatically like sailing fats and concentrate on the environmnet around you... seriously try it, not necessarily Second Life but it is good...
Anyway where else can you go sailing at 11pm in the morning (apart from the Southport 24hr race?)

Get a grip, get a good first life sailing career and add value with a fun second life...

I'll buy the idea of virtual sailing...simulators are a very good training tool. I'm not sure Second Life is really a sailing simulator though is it?

Yes, Tillerman's review was funny...I imagine he's a better Laser sailor then the two of us combined and he's a terrific writer to boot...but he is a bit out of the Second Life demographic...so take a risk and come sailing with me in world...judge for yourself.

I don't know if he really is out of the demographic, a word that encompasses a lot more than age and income. He's a retired CIO and probably more aware of virtual reality and AI software than most. But then again, maybe he doesn't know much technology beyond ERP.

In reality, I'm not doing it for the same reason I don't sail enough, a 15 month old and a 6 year old. Both timesuckers.

Yes - I have two young children as well. They do go to sleep at a certain time though ;-) My only point being that you might not be so quick to dismiss something you've not given a fair shake - IMHO. If you're a proponent of community, and you seem to be what with the recent thrill for SA and your long running sailing blog, then think of Second Life as every Internet community tool you've ever known on steroids.

Here's a good SL sailing oriented read ...

And - no offense to any former CIO's of ERP companies - here's a Q&A with IBM's Irving Wladawsky-Berger...head of technical strategy for Big Blue. In the Q&A he covers off on why one of the worlds leading tech companies is investing (not just in SL per se but in this type of immersive 3D technology).

BTW - is there a reason you stopped carrying my link? You're still listed on Zephyr. Just curious.

Merry Christmas.
