I'm racing this weekend so naturally I've been checking weather reports every 8 minutes starting two days ago. It goes up and down, but it's pretty clear that we're not likely to have rain.
But when I go to check NOAA this morning, I get this:
Tonight Through Tuesday
W to SW winds 5 to 15 kt...strongest in the afternoon and evening.
It's Friday. They're lumping 5 days into one little blurb that says almost nothing. It's like the scene from LA Story where Steve Martin starts pre-taping the weather reports. I guess they've determined that Hurricane Season is "almost" over, let's mail it in for the Holidays.

They (NOAA) have definitely been getting things pretty wrong around here for the last while. One interesting thing I've noticed though is that the text based forecast does not correlate with the graphical forecast sometimes. Case in point, last weekend they predicted 40kt winds on Sunday in Portsmouth. This would heve been heavy for Frosty racing. Everybody seemed to be referencing the text report, which really didn't change until almost Sunday morning. The graphical forecast however was on the money three days out. I like the graphical forecast better anyways because you can basically animate the forecast with respect to virtually all weather parameters and get a great visual as to how things are going to play out.
My impression is that when NOAA say "5 to 15 kt" it's a euphemism for "we haven't a clue but it probably won't kill you - have a nice day."
That's one reason I use Sailflow.com. :D
I think you've pretty much nailed it Tillerman, though I think the range is the 5-10 and usually from the NW. "light and variable" is a death sentence.
