Last Sail of the Year

I made it to 36. That's 3 sails per month for the year. Even taking out 13 days sailing to Hawaii, I had almost 2 sails per month. That really isn't bad given the constraints of raising 2 young children.

I really have to thank my wife for all of this sailing time. She graciously let me go off sailing to Hawaii (if you've forgotten about that, click on the first day and follow the links at the bottom of each post) and has encouraged me all year to get out on the water whenever we had some free time. I also have to thank Noah for overcoming his fears and getting up the nerve to sail. Camille, too, we started the year off right together with a tradition I hope to continue on 1/1/09.

This brings me to sail #36, a very relaxing affair with light winds and chilly temperatures. Heidi and Noah both wanted to go sailing and were willing to bundle up for the trip. Having them both wanting to sail makes it so much easier to get out on the water, my only responsibility is to keep the boat provisioned and clean. And sail the boat but Heidi is getting more into that since the more sailing she can do, the less Noah-duty she's on.

The sailing itself was uneventful, it was a pretty empty bay given how beautiful it was. Light winds but we headed out to the end of the Berkeley pier; our goal was to get within ten feet of the last piling but about 1/4 of a mile away the wind just died. We tried to coerce some boatspeed back to the marina but that just wasn't happening so we fired up the trusty Atomic 4 and headed back, full of the satisfaction that we'd gone out one last time. And that there's a lot more to come in 2009.

Wow, just read the Pacific Cup Series, or How I Learned to Love Sea Shanties and Stop Fearing Naked Sailors.

Great read! I can't wait to make the trip myself. Hopefully I can crew with somebody this coming season.

Aloha nui loa!

36 is great! And a good place to start for next year's goal. I bet as your kids get older you'll get more and more days on the water. With them!

Happy New Year!
