It hit me over the weekend that I don't need to buy a personal EPIRB (otherwise known as a Personal Locator Beacon, PLB). I can rent one. I have absolutely no need for one outside of this race and there are a lot of other ways to spend $600+.
I've only found one place, PLB Rentals (good descriptive name), but am trying to find other sources. Interestingly enough, it's cheaper to rent a big EPIRB for the boat from BoatUS than this personal one. Of course, I'm not going to lug 15 pounds of EPIRB onto watch with me every night. And it's still cheaper than buying.
Any advice on other rental outfits, comments are open.

Any idea where one can rent a fully-equipped liferaft?
The recommendations I'm getting from SA are to use Life Raft and Survival Equipment out of Rhode Island. BoatUS also has rentals.
For a $10/week discount at PLBRentals.com just use the promotional code KEVIN. We've worked hard in cooperation with NOAA (manages the SARSAT satellites)to develop an easy on-line PLB rental process that is both convenient and effective. If you have any questions, e-mail us at support@plbrentals.com or call at (425)299-5662. Thanks!
And good public relations seals the deal, I'm going with PLBRentals.
Renting definitely the way to go. That is what a lot of people who do the Everglades Challenge do. I am planning a small boat offshore trip and compiling an equipment list now. Any ideas on best route for comm equipment? I've got nothing now, not sure that a handheld VHF is even that useful.
Seriously-are you going to be able to (and do you want to) rent something that will allow you to communicate with civilization? What will we do with a 14 day black hole of EVK4 SuperBlog?
brrrrrrr scary thought!!
